Making smoothies is a pretty easy art. But there are a few things to keep in mind that will make your life easier.
Use a good blender. Even a great blender. Vitamix, Blendtec, and Ninja Ultima are some good brands that come recommended. But it is worth it to get something that is going to blend everything nicely and not just break on you.
When it comes to adding sweetness, I would make the smoothie first as is, then try it out. You’ll figure out which smoothies you want to add sweetener to and which is fine with its natural sweetness. Some great natural sweeteners are honey, syrup, or even milk that adds some richness to it. I personally love coconut milk or vanilla almond milk.
Sometimes ease of access means you’ll drink/eat it more. When I pre-made my whole week’s worth of salads in one huge bowl, I ate salad every day. Similarly, it helps to stock up on your ingredients for smoothies. Keeping things frozen is a great way to go as it makes it easy to access and throw together.
You can make a whole week’s worth of your smoothie and freeze them in mason jars. Simply thaw the smoothies for the next day in the fridge overnight. Voila! Easy instant smoothies.
Remember you can add any chia seed, flax seed, hemp seed, or whatever you would like to these smoothies to enhance their nutrition.
One thing to consider about smoothies is that you are eating/drinking a lot more at once than you would normally eat. If you’re trying to watch weight, keep in mind the calories that are being consumed. They still are good calories and healthy as long as you’re not adding sugar. It has also been brought to my attention before that fiber in fruit and such are broken down when blended, perhaps causing you to feel hungrier sooner after you eat a smoothie than if you had eaten the same amount un-blended. So keep these things in mind about smoothies.
Also, I term the ingredients as “potion ingredients” because my kids love calling these my potions (did I mention we also love Harry Potter). It’s also a fun way to get the younger ones to drink this healthy stuff.
