Street Smart Mom’s Guide to Camping in the Rain
Hey Smart Moms!
I can’t tell you how much my family loves camping, and with the rainy season upon us, we have to make some modified adjustments to our outdoor adventures. Especially since we just have a few weeks left until it’s too cold to go camping. But since a little rain never killed anybody, I’ve come up with a little guide to get the most out of this last leg.
Camping in the rain!
- Before you go anywhere, be sure to make a list of your equipment and supplies. Be sure to keep track of tarps and covers, and make certain you have sealant spray. Don’t forget to replace anything that has run out before you go, and don’t forget the extra batteries!
- Have a plan! Come up with several activities that will keep everyone occupied and entertained while you’re waiting out the storm. This can include things such as coloring books, stories, board games, crafts, a deck of cards, and some food that doesn’t require a fire to cook. Also remember to have the right amount of light to see!
- Plan properly where to set up camp. Don’t put your tent at the bottom of a hill where water can easily run into it. Set up on high ground and if possible, look for tree coverage.
- Know what’s available in your area. Check out the scene around your camp site. Sometimes a break from the rain such as catching a movie, going to a local bowling alley, or great restaurant can help put everyone in a better mood if the rain drags on!
- Find what amenities are at the parks you visit. Camp sites might have a laundromat nearby that can help you dry your wet sleeping bags.
- Personally I enjoy a little hike in the rain, if it’s not raining too hard. The best time to go is before it starts, when the trails are still dry, and you can still enjoy the scenery.
- Also, it’s important to know when to call it a day! We’ve been camping before when the rain wouldn’t let up, and the tarps couldn’t stop the water from coming in, so we’ll either pack up early and head home, or just find a lodge or hotel nearby where we can dry off and warm up.
Hopefully these tips help you have the best time with your family to enjoy the last warm(ish) nights until winter!
